Southern University at Baton Rouge

Southern University at Baton Rouge was established in 1880 at New Orleans, Louisiana before its movement to the Baton Rouge vicinity. The school was made possible by the Pinckney Pinchback's legislation that provided for an educational institution for black people. It is important to note that Mr. Pinchback was the nation's first black governor, who worked diligently with other black government leaders to make the dream of the Southern University a reality.

The New Orleans branch of Southern University reopened in 1959 and the Shreveport one opened in 1964. Together with the Southern University at Baton Rouge, these two branches constitute what is known as the Southern University System (www.sus.edu). Southern University at Baton Rouge is recognized by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The SACS offers Associate and Bachelor courses in Arts and Sciences. This university also offers Master's and Doctoral degrees.
