Cosmetic Surgery- Some Things to Think About

Many people think that cosmetic surgery may be the answer to their prayers, and it may be, but there are some things that should be considered before making the final decision.

Often one of the more common concerns with cosmetic surgery is the cost. No surgery is inexpensive by any means, but the bad thing about cosmetic surgery is it is rarely covered by insurance at all, meaning that the patient has to bear the full costs. You will not only have to pay for the surgery itself, but also the office visits before and after the surgery, as well as hospital expenses if you are not having an in-office procedure. If you can prove that your cosmetic surgery is medically necessary, then you may be able to convince your health insurance to help with some of the costs, but this is a rare occasion. Most often, you have to pay the total amount completely out of pocket.

Another thing to think about is the amount of time that you will be required to spend away from work and family responsibilities. You will have time going to and from appointments, both before and after surgery, and you will probably have restrictions placed on the things you are allowed to do once the surgery is completed, often for six weeks or more, depending on the types of procedures you are having. If you can’t devote enough time to go to all of the appointments, and care for yourself properly after the surgery has been completed, then you might want to re-think your decision.

Again, depending on the type of procedure you are having, you may have to spend significant time out of work, time that you may not be able to afford, or may not be granted to take. If you have family medical leave available, you should be okay, as this grants you twelve weeks each year, but if you haven’t been on the job long enough, or have used this leave for other things, then you may not be able to get time off, and could potentially lose your job. Is cosmetic surgery worth that to you?

You need to make certain that you understand the restrictions that you will be placed under after the surgery, and make certain that you can follow the doctor’s orders, and if not, then don’t have the surgery, as you could seriously endanger your health.

As with any surgery, you should have a thorough examination prior, just to make certain that your physical condition will allow you to have the surgery safely, with little health risk. Cosmetic surgery is not worth risking your health for, so this is a crucial step that everyone should take.

You should know beforehand that people are often skeptical of cosmetic surgery, and that some members of your family or friends may not support your decision, and may give you a hard time about it. If you can’t handle this, then you may want to consider other options.

You should talk with your surgeon about the possible risks and problems that could occur with the surgery, so that you can decide whether or not you can handle those issues if they should arise.

Last but not least, you shouldn’t go into cosmetic surgery expecting miracles to occur, as there are limits to what a surgeon can do. While cosmetic surgery can enhance your overall appearance and boost your self-esteem, it cannot make the imperfect perfect, and you shouldn’t expect it to do so.
