Cosmetic Surgery-Selecting a Surgeon for Your Procedure

If you have already made up your mind about having cosmetic surgery, the next thing you need to do is find the surgeon you wish to perform the procedure you will be having. There are some basic guidelines and things to think about when choosing a cosmetic surgeon, and hopefully the information you find in this article will be useful for you.

If you know someone who has previously had cosmetic surgery, ask them who did their procedure and what they thought of the experience. In many cases, this is the best way to get a reliable opinion on a physician’s skills and competency. You can also talk to medical providers in the area you live in, or of course, do an internet search to find cosmetic surgeons in your area. You definitely don’t want to just randomly choose someone to do your cosmetic surgery, as you may be undergoing a major procedure.

When you do find some local cosmetic surgeons in the area that perform the procedure you would like to have done, you should take the time to look into their credentials and background. You want to make certain that the person performing your cosmetic surgery is competent and trained to do so. It may even be a good idea to ask a potential surgeon for references, and do some checking on your own, just to make sure you are making a wise choice.

If you choose a surgeon that was referred from a family member or personal friend, then ask that person questions about the surgeon, the procedure, and what you should expect. You need to be comfortable with the surgeon you select, and confident in his or her abilities.

When you go for an initial interview or consultation with a cosmetic surgeon, ask if you can see some before and after photos of similar procedures done on other patients, so you can see for yourself the quality of the work. If you like the work that is shown to you, then you know that you will likely be happy with the results of your own procedure as well.

Before you make a final decision about having cosmetic surgery, you should put some thought into what the surgery will do for you, and how it will change your overall appearance. In some instances, the change is not worth the pain and cost of the surgery, but that is something that you have to decide for yourself.

When you talk with your surgeon, you should also talk about your recovery, and what you should expect. You need to learn what you need to do before the surgery occurs, such as registering at the hospital, what to eat and drink, etc. You will need to find out how long you will have to remain out of work or school, and what kinds of physical limitations and restrictions you may have after surgery, and how long you can expect them to remain in place.

You may also want to ask about the procedure itself, how long you will be in surgery, the tools and equipment that will be used, incisions and closures, etc. Many surgeons will also talk to you about pain after-surgery, and medications you will be given to help keep your pain at a tolerable level.

Write down questions and concerns as they come to you, and take the list with you when you visit your cosmetic surgeon. If you can’t get the responses that you are looking for, it may be time to look for another surgeon.
