Could You Benefit from Gastric Bypass?

If you are overweight, odds are you may have already tried several different diets and exercises, and if you are like some people, none of them may have proven successful. In some cases, your health could be severely compromised by being overweight, and if nothing has worked for you thus far, you might be a good candidate for gastric bypass surgery.

You shouldn’t just plan to have gastric bypass surgery because it seems like the quick and easy way to lose weight, and in fact, there are certain conditions you must meet to even be eligible to have gastric bypass surgery. You have to be qualified as obese, usually meaning that you weigh at least one hundred pounds more than you should considering your height and body type. Your doctor may also look at your BMI, or body mass index, and if that number is more than forty, you will probably be declared a suitable candidate, even if you don’t qualify based on your weight. If you have health conditions that have been caused by your weight problems already, such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, or sleep apnea, you may qualify if your BMI is at least 35, even if you don’t fit into the weight or normal BMI ranges. You will have to also prove to the physician that you have tried and been unsuccessful with several diet and exercise programs, as well as understand and be prepared to undergo a major surgical procedure.

If you think you would like to have gastric bypass surgery, you should talk to your doctor. Your doctor will then perform a thorough assessment of your health and mental status, including blood work, x-rays, ultrasounds, etc. Your doctor has to be certain that you qualify for and can survive the surgery.

Some medical problems may cause you to be denied as a candidate for gastric bypass surgery. If you are addicted to alcohol or drugs, have liver conditions, mental issues, or any other medical condition that could contribute to your overall weight, then you probably won’t be able to have this type of surgery. If you are able to solve these problems, then you may qualify for the surgery at a later date.

If you are a smoker or someone who frequently drinks alcohol, you should stop at least one month prior to having surgery, so that you have better odds of a speedy recovery. There is a possibility that you will require a blood transfusion during the surgery, so you might want to consider banking your own blood in advance for the procedure, or have a family member donate for you, if you prefer not to receive blood from an unknown donor.

There are three main types of gastric bypass surgeries; you should talk with your doctor to help decide which will be best for you. You might want to do some research before your appointment, so you have an idea of the type of surgery you are interested in, and the risks and benefits of your choice.

You should keep in mind that even though you are having gastric bypass surgery, you will still have to eat a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis if you want to lose weight and keep it off. The surgery will help, but you also contribute to your ultimate weight loss success or failure. You should have this surgery to better your health, rather than improve your looks, although that often comes along as well!
